FSU football has been bad on special teams for a while, but they were worse under special teams coordinator Alonzo Hampton.
It goes without saying FSU football special teams were ungodly terrible in 2018. They were not coordinated AT ALL and exhibited some of the most undisciplined play you’ll see in college football.
The kickoff team wasn’t good and neither was the punt coverage team. In fact, the only good thing about special teams was punter Logan Tyler who had a career year because the offense was so terrible.
FSU fans have been calling for Hampton to be replaced and it looks like that process has started according to a report by Bruce Feldman.

As you can see a lot of FSU football fans were rejoicing from the news. It’s not clear if Taggart will hire another special teams coordinator or if he’ll just split those duties with another position coach like linebacker’s coach Raymond Woodie who handled special teams for him at Oregon.
Thoughts
I don’t like to call for anyone’s job, but this was an instance where it was probably warranted. It made no sense for FSU football to have the athletes they have on the roster and be that terrible on special teams.
They were alarmingly bad and consistently gave the FSU offense poor field position which obviously didn’t help an offense that was struggling to score.
What’s easier? An offense having to drive 70 yards to score a touchdown or a 85 yards? It’s incredibly difficult for a good offense to consistently make 80 yard drives, much less a terrible one.
The move should be a sign that Willie Taggart is willing to make the necessary changes to get FSU football competitive again as he had hired Hampton at two other places prior to becoming head coach at FSU.
