FSU Football should go after Ron Dugans (again) to coach receivers

FSU football has another chance to bring home the former wide receiver who won a national title after he has been let go from his last job.

There aren’t a lot of times in life where you get a chance to get a do over when it comes to big decisions – and if things turn out as reported involving a FSU football rival, the Seminoles might just get that chance to make up for what took place last offseason and bring home someone who knows how to win with the garnet and gold.

On Tuesday, NBC affiliate WTVJ cited a South Florida Sun-Sentinel report that new Miami Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz has parted ways with every offensive assistant coach from the 2018 season – a move seen as one that former coach Mark Richt wouldn’t do after an abysmal season on that side of the ball.

Wednesday, Diaz confirmed that he indeed fired everyone on that side of the ball. What does that mean for the Seminoles? Well, it gives FSU football another chance to get Ron Dugans – who has spent the last three seasons coaching receivers for the Canes – back to Tallahassee for a chance to join the staff of head coach Willie Taggart…again.

Last season, rumors were swirling from Tallahassee to Coral Gables that Dugans was being sought by Taggart to come join the staff of the Noles once he arrived. Ultimately, Dugans chose to stay with the Canes and broke the heart of those of us that wanted him to return to the school where he was a key member of the 1999 national title team.

Now, everyone gets a chance to make up for that just one year later with Dugans now looking for a job and FSU football having a chance to put him on the staff for next season. I know that David Kelly is still employed as the wide receivers coach at this point, but remember that he did so as a favor to Taggart after not having coached since 2013.

With Dugans available, it would allow the Seminoles to bring in someone who has trained receivers the right way of how to play the position – including how to block well, something needed in the Gulf Coast Offense – while allowing Kelly to return back upstairs and become a vital member of the behind the scenes work to make the Noles great.

Last season, the Hurricanes passing game was among the worst in college football – but that has everything to do with the quarterback debacle and not with the receivers. Dugans has shown that he can build players – so imagine what he could do with guys like Tamorrion Terry and others.

FSU football has a chance to bring home one of our own – while also benefiting the team and allowing Dugans to get a chance to rub it right in the face of their rivals and giving the current position coach a chance to do what he really wants. That all sounds like a win-win for everyone.
