FSU Football should schedule game vs. Big Three military schools
By Jason Parker
FSU football has only played one game all time against either Army, Navy or the Air Force – and that number should go up in the near future.
Saturday, one of the best moments in all of sports takes place when the Army Black Knights will take the football field against the Navy Midshipmen – a game that may not mean a lot for national titles like games FSU football plays, but one that means a lot more in the whole scheme of things for things that have nothing to do with the sport.
Each season, those two programs along with the Air Force Falcons compete for the Commander in Chief Trophy when it comes to this round robin tournament on the football field. It’s something that the Seminoles watch from a far since they know very little about facing the three foes that will be fighting for our country after their time on the field.
In fact, FSU football has combined to play just one game against the three major military academies – a 38-6 victory over the Midshipmen during the 1978 season.
That is something that needs to change in the near future. I’m not saying it needs to happen in 2019 or 2020, but at some point in the future the Seminoles need to schedule one of those foes on the football field – it may not do anything for Playoff consideration, but it’s about doing something more important that comes with honoring the military academies.
FSU football has played other programs like Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, among others, over their 72 season history – but with all due respect, those schools don’t have the same pageantry that comes with either Army, Navy or the Air Force.
While Navy has played UCF and USF as members of the American Athletic Conference, they have played Miami five times and have never played Florida – while Army actually owns a 2-1 record over Florida but has lost all three games against Miami as Air Force has played the Hurricanes twice and the Gators once.
So, the Hurricanes have played 10 games against the trio and the Gators have played four games while the Seminoles have done it just once? That is something that needs to change for a program like FSU football that prides itself each season in honoring the military.
Somehow, sometimes and against someone from that group of three choices, FSU football must schedule at least one game soon and make it a more than once every 72 season event.
