FSU football will without its best defense end in 2019 as Brian Burns has declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.

FSU football received some news most expected Monday when junior defensive end Brian Burns announced he’ll be pursuing his dream of playing in the NFL.

Burns is considered a player that could be drafted in the first round based on his potential and production shown at FSU football the past three seasons.

He burst on the scene as a true freshman in 2016 with 9.5 sacks and used his sophomore year to become more of a complete player that could play on more than obvious passing downs.

His junior year Burns led the Noles in sacks with 10 and had 15.5 tackles for loss which were both career highs.

Both numbers are better than Josh Sweat who was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Sweat would have gone higher if not for previous injury issues with his knee.

Thoughts

There’s no question Burns will be missed in 2019. Unlike last year when FSU football lost Josh Sweat there isn’t a proven commodity to to take his place.

FSU will rely heavily on former five-star defensive end Joshua Kaindoh to put up the slack left in Burns absence.

It also gives FSU a chance to continue pitching five-star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux there’s a spot for him in Tallahassee.

Burns continues the FSU legacy of producing defensive ends that are drafted by NFL teams. Josh Sweat, DeMarcus Walker, Mario Edwards Jr., Bjorn Warner, Tank Carradine and Brandon Jenkins have all been selected since 2013.
