Why FSU Football should (sarcastically) make College Football Playoff

FSU football has no chance at all of making the four team playoff this season, but the past argument about schedule strength is why they should.

On Tuesday night, FSU football fans tuned their televisions to the Worldwide Leader for a chance to see if the Seminoles were going to be among the 25 teams listed in the initial rankings for the annual College Football Playoff – of course, I’m totally kidding about that because with a record of 4-4 there was no chance of that taking place.

But they should have been (sarcastically) for one very good reason – when it comes to the argument from the playoff committee about schedule strength and the idea of a “quality loss”, well the Seminoles have everyone else beat in that category and could pad their resume in the coming weeks.

During the inaugural season of the system in 2014, the Noles found themselves ranked below teams like Alabama and Oregon despite the fact FSU football had no losses and the others had setbacks on their resume. At the time, the argument was made that losses should be given the benefit of the doubt because of who they were to.

Well, if you want a quality loss, the Seminoles have plenty of those and may add another one pretty soon at this rate!

In the initial rankings for the playoffs, a total of six teams were slotted that have either already beaten FSU football or will play the Seminoles in the coming weeks:

  • No. 2 Clemson (beat Noles 59-10)
  • No. 4 Notre Dame (Play 11/10)
  • No. 11 Florida (Play 11/24)
  • No. 19 Syracuse (beat Noles 30-7)
  • No. 21 NC State (Play Saturday)
  • No. 22 Boston College (Play 11/17)

When you add on to that a 24-3 loss to Virginia Tech on Labor Day and the disappointing loss to Miami by one point last month, no one has a better group of “quality losses” or potential ones than FSU football with the potential of eight ranked losses by the end of the season.

Hell, if the Seminoles can shock the world and somehow find a way to sweep this month they would break even with a 4-4 record against ranked foes this season that include two of the top 11 teams at this point – so let us book our tickets for the semifinal in the Orange Bowl now, right?!?!?!

Of course, this article was written completely as a joke (a sad one at that) considering that the Seminoles are barely going to make it to a bowl game, much less one of the two that will decide the matchup for the national title game – but it also goes to show that the committee’s idea that there is such a thing as a quality loss is insane.

For now, FSU football can take solace in knowing they may finish this season playing the toughest schedule in the history of the sport and may get to play spoiler for the two teams – Notre Dame and Florida – that still have a realistic shot of making the system.
