FSU Football: ‘Noles schedule is what we thought it was
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football was thought to have one of the toughest schedules in the country, but we thought otherwise and were correct.
Six weeks ago I posed a question regarding the schedule strength of FSU football and whether it was really as tough as most thought?
Of course this was prior to the debacle of the FSU offense that revealed itself in the opener against Virginia Tech.
ESPN’s FPI Index had the Noles with the No. 2 toughest schedule in the country and I just didn’t see it based on what I had seen last season coupled with what each team lost.
The Noles are (3-3) with losses to Virginia Tech, Syracuse and Miami. Let’s be clear, none of those teams are very good. Virginia Tech lost to Old Dominion and needed a late touchdown to beat a terrible UNC team Saturday.
Syracuse is better than I thought, but FSU beat themselves in that game more than anything. Miami is a fraud and I said that prior to the season. If they don’t force turnovers on defense they can lose to anyone and that’s not a sustainable recipe as evidence of their loss to Virginia Saturday.
FSU football is getting ready to get into the most difficult part of its schedule and Wake Forest is Wake Forest as we initially thought. Clemson has not looked like the unbeatable force most thought they would be. I’m not saying FSU beats them, just Clemson doesn’t look like a truly elite team right now.
NC State is undefeated but their wins are James Madison, Georgia State, Marshall, Virginia and a Boston College without AJ Dillon. So how good are they really?
Notre Dame is a legit team although they have struggled in a couple of games this year too. Boston College is Boston College, but it’s a game the Noles can win unless they simply beat themselves.
Florida has looked better than I thought, particularly on offense but that offense doesn’t matchup well against FSU’s defense. If the FSU offense can get out of its own way it’s a game they win.
ESPN ranked FSU’s first six games as the No. 68 toughest schedule and the remaining six games as the No. 7 toughest. There’s no way that can equate to the No. 2 toughest schedule in the country right?
Just as I said six weeks ago, the schedule isn’t as tough as everyone thought it would be. It’s just the Noles have not looked near as good on offense as everyone had hoped through six games.
