Willie Taggart: ‘We got to teach them how to win again’
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football has a young team that went through one of its most difficult seasons in 2017. Willie Taggart talks about the Miami loss and what needs to happen moving forward.
FSU football can’t turn the ball over. That’s a statement we wrote I don’t know how many times leading up to the Miami game.
They are a team that lives and dies by the turnover and the game Saturday night was a prime example of that if you look at both halves of the game.
Willie Taggart spoke with the media immediately following the game and spoke on a variety of things.
He stressed the importance of not turning the ball over, the call the officials blew against the Noles and more.
However, more importantly he said they are going to have to check this FSU team how to win again.
Thoughts
It’s crazy how on season can change a program. Well, it has been several seasons in the making that culminated with the 2017 season which was the worst season since 2009.
However, as Vince Lombardi once said, “winning is a habit and unfortunately so is losing.” FSU football has to get used to success again.
The Louisville win was a step in the right direction and I think that performance poured over into the beginning of the Miami game.
FSU got a three and out on defense and went right down the field and scored a touchdown against Miami. They hit Miami right in the mouth in the first half in that game.
However, when Miami hit them right in the mouth in the third quarter with back-to-back touchdowns off FSU turnovers the Noles has no answers. They had no way to turn the momentum back to their favor, and this is the precise thing Willie Taggart is talking about.
It’s not a fight if one team is beating the brakes off the other. A fight can only take place if there’s adversity on both sides, both fighters landing punches back and forth.
FSU was Miami the week before against Louisville. They took some haymakers before landing some of their own and we saw Louisville fold much the same way FSU did against Miami.
Now, FSU has to learn how to put opponents away when they have them in the corner reigning down punches. They didn’t do that and allowed Miami to recover just enough to come back and steal a victory.
The Miami loss hurt, but it was a valuable teaching experience for the Noles and I think they’ll be better for it.
