Should FSU Football be on upset alert against Virginia Tech?

FSU Football is a touchdown favorite in their season opener against the Hokies, but two outlets seem to think that the Noles could go down early.

In just one day, the FSU football team will take the field inside Doak Campbell Stadium for one of the biggest home openers in recent memory – hosting the Virginia Tech Hokies in the first game under new head coach Willie Taggart in a mission to move on from what took place during a 2017 season to forget.

While the Seminoles have one of the toughest schedules in college football this season – maybe even the toughest when you look at it – there is a growing consensus that the Noles should get through the first game with a victory and establish a little momentum heading into the meat of the schedule later on.

Not everyone feels that way, though.

In fact, two outlets have gone out and put FSU football on the dreaded two word phrase that teams do not want to hear: upset alert. Both CBSSports.com and The Spun listed the game between the Seminoles and Hokies as ones where the favorite (right now the Noles by about seven points) might go down.

While it should be noted that while neither outlet picked the Hokies to win, each one had their reasons for why the Seminoles need to watch out.

"CBS Sports: The unpredictability of it all makes for an interesting bow to put on the end of Week 1. Virginia Tech has defensive questions, but Florida State is breaking in a new offense and it’s all a little bit of a wild card right now. The Noles should win, but the line has moved enough for me to think the Hokies can stay within a touchdown. The Spun: There are questions over in Blacksburg about Bud Foster’s defense, a rarity for his many years with the Hokies, but Justin Fuente has settled in with the program, and will be a very tough out in Week 1 for a new-look ‘Noles team."

Look, I am not going to sit here for one second and tell you that FSU football is going to go out and run all over the Hokies for a 28 point victory (as nice as that would be) – and the Seminoles would be stupid to look past Virginia Tech, who has been a consistent team for much of this decade and is just two years removed from winning the Coastal Division.

With that being said, if both teams are playing their best then the Seminoles should have no problem getting out with a comfortable win. The biggest advantage for the Noles is the fact that the Hokies’ offense has plenty of issues that the FSU football defense should be able to exploit.

However, as we have seen in the past few seasons when the Seminoles have lost to teams they had no business losing to, you can’t take anything for granted.
