FSU Football: Similarities between 2010 and 2018 seasons are amazing
By Jason Parker
FSU football is looking to bounce back from a forgettable season last year, and they just have to look back to the start of the decade as a guide.
In just over a week, the FSU football team will take the field inside Doak Campbell Stadium looking to overcome a 7-6 season that year before that resulted in a new coach leading the Seminoles for the upcoming campaign that has become filled with optimism about what could take place.
Oh, I’m sorry – did you think I was talking about the 2018 season for the Seminoles? No, I went back into a time machine and acted like Chop Chat was around for the 2010 season of FSU football.
Indeed, when you compare what the future season of Seminoles football may behold, the similarities between the first season of the previous administration and the inaugural campaign of head coach Willie Taggart have a lot more in common than some might realize.
FSU Football has a quarterback competition that can be won by two very qualified candidates
While Taggart hasn’t decided between Deondre Francois and James Blackman at this point, the Seminoles were in somewhat the same position entering the 2010 season in deciding between Christian Poner, who was coming back from injury, and E.J. Manuel.
The Seminoles have a monster schedule that is among the tops in the country, including a huge non-conference road game
In 2010, FSU football faced off against Florida at home and had to travel to play Oklahoma in the second week of the season. This year, it’s Clemson coming to town off of three straight playoff appearances and a big November trip to play at Notre Dame.
FSU football is coming off of a loss to Miami the season before by four points on the final play of the game
Last season, the Seminoles watched as the Hurricanes came in and got a last second touchdown to win their first game in the series since – 2009, when they came into Tallahassee and left with a 38-34 victory when the Noles couldn’t complete a last second pass in the endzone.
The Seminoles have a September home game against Samford
The two teams have met just twice before in their history – with one of the games coming as the opener of the 2010 season which FSU football had scheduled as the opener of what was going to be the final season for legendary coach (and Samford grad) Bobby Bowden.
Now, during the 2010 season, FSU football finished with a 10-4 record that included wins over Miami, Florida, Clemson and a bowl victory over South Carolina to go along with winning the ACC Atlantic Division. At this point, I think many fans of the Noles would not be disappointed with a repeat of that.
