Why FSU Football might not be the best bet of opening weekend

FSU football is favored in the opener against Virginia Tech by every major betting outlet, but one look shows you might not want to put money on the Noles.

For the third straight season, the FSU football team will open their regular season with a naked matchup against a team that could make or break their season. After opening the 2016 season against Ole Miss with a comeback win and losing last season against Alabama in a game we would like to forget, it’s time to welcome Virginia Tech to town.

Unlike last year when the Seminoles were the underdog against the Crimson Tide, the Noles will take the field against the Hokies – baring any injuries or circumstances in the coming weeks – as the favorite in the game with all the major outlets having FSU football as nearly a touchdown favorite for the game.

One of them, Oddsshark.com, has the Seminoles as a six point favorite entering the game – a number that might get some of us in garnet and gold to think about laying some money down. But, and this is just my advice, I would keep the green backs in your pocket for this one.

Aside from the fact that FSU football wouldn’t win you a lot of money since they are favored, it is still an unknown about what Seminoles team will show up since we have a new coach, a new scheme and quite frankly plenty of questions left about what the Noles will be this season. At this point, guaranteeing the Seminoles are seven points better is unknown.

Now, if you really must throw some cash down, here are some of the games to bet on and ones to stay away from:

Good Bets

  • Ole Miss (+1.5) vs. Texas Tech – The Rebels won’t do much this season, but will get a win in the opener.
  • FAU (+24) at Oklahoma – No, the Owls won’t win the game but they will keep it interesting against the defensively challenged Big XII.
  • Notre Dame (+1.5) vs. Michigan – Until the Wolverines do something big, there is no reason to give them more credit than they deserve.
  • Louisville (+28) vs. Alabama – The Cardinals are going to lose this one big, but Nick Saban is known for calling off the dogs after getting comfortable with a lead.

Bad Bets

  • Maryland (+10.5) vs. Texas – With Walt Bell now running the offensive for FSU football, the Terrapins are going to get blown out in this one.
  • Washington (+3) vs. Auburn – The Huskies may win the Pac 12 and the Tigers may be over rated, but for one week the roles will be reversed.
  • Tennessee (+7) vs. West Virginia – Well, some teams in the SEC will remind the rest of the country why they are a top heavy conference that is over rated.

dark. Next. Will ACC be left out of College Football Playoff in 2018?

  • LSU (+2.5) vs. Miami – I know all of us FSU football fans will be rooting for the Tigers, but right now I’m not convinced they can beat the Hurricanes in the opener.
