FSU football new defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett spoke with media for the first time Sunday afternoon.

FSU football fans have been waiting to hear from the man they expect to bring FSU defense back to elite status.

They got their chance Sunday when Harlon Barnett spoke for around 20 minutes as the Noles get ready to start fall camp Monday morning.

Barnett spoke on a variety of topics to how him getting the job came about to how the “star” position fits into his defense. He also spoke about how his defense differs from how the old regime did things.

“From day one to the spring game…day 15…the really picked everything up and the more comfortable they got with the defense the better each individual looked…so we looked better as a defense overall,” said Barnett.

He spoke on his first impressions of the players on the team implying this FSU roster is much more talented than what he was working with at Michigan State the last 14 years.

“As we went through spring I’m like man there’s some dudes here man. Ya know, no disrespect to Michigan State…not at all..obviously it’s my alma mater but it’s some dudes down here man. Guys that jumped out at cha and had really good springs. Brian Burns…that’s a dude man…that’s a dude,” said Barnett.

He went on to mention Joshua Kaindoh, Dontavious Jackson, and Janarius Robinson as all players among many who stood out to him or he had heard great things about them.

Thoughts

Watching Coach Barnett really got me excited as he seems like an intense guy that would demand respect and work to get the best out of his players.

His defense seems very simple, stop the run first and foremost which makes opposing quarterbacks have to make low percentage throws consistently to beat you.

More times than not that’ll work in your favor because there are not a lot of great passers in college football anymore.

As he said, there’s plenty of talent on the FSU football roster. The biggest thing for FSU to improve on from the past few years is eliminating long third down conversions.

That’s something that killed the Noles against good teams and cost them at least two wins last year.

If they can eliminate that problem they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in 2018.
