FSU football has had plenty of memories in the 16 seasons of the former system, with two players over that span being ranked among the top performers.

While we are trapped in the world of the College Football Playoff system, fans of FSU football might wish that we go back to the old Bowl Championship System – of which the Seminoles took part in eight of the 16 seasons it was in place, including four times playing for the national title and twice coming home with the crown.

Both of those wins – the convincing victory over Virginia Tech and the come from behind win over Auburn just five years ago – came with plenty of memories that will stick with fans of the Seminoles for decades to come.

Now, one publication is including the work of two players from those FSU football games among the best ever in a BCS title game. Sports Illustrated recently ranked the top 10 championship game performances – with Kermit Whitfield in 2013 coming in at No. 10 and Peter Warrick’s amazing night in New Orleans ranked as No. 3 all-time.

"(Whitfield’s) 100-yard kick return touchdown with under five minutes left in the fourth quarter gave the Seminoles their first lead of the final BCS title game since the opening minutes. Auburn would pull ahead on the ensuing possession, but Jameis Winston responded by leading a game-winning drive ending in a last-minute touchdown pass to Kelvin Benjamin. That would not have been possible without Whitfield’s dramatic boost to reclaim momentum for Florida State."

While the earlier fake punt was done more out of a desperation move, Whitfield’s touchdown gave FSU football fans the hope that the Seminoles might actually have a chance to win the game after being down big just before the half.

As for Warrick, well there isn’t enough that can be said about what took place against the Hokies.

"Warrick was among the most dynamic receivers of his generation, and he shined in the 2000 Sugar Bowl with 163 yards and a pair of scores on a mere six catches. He also returned a punt return 59 yards for a touchdown and brought in a two-point conversion, accounting for 20 of the Seminoles’ 46 points."

There is no doubt that Warrick was the reason FSU football won their second national title and that game showed why he was more than likely the best player in all of college football that season.

The Seminoles won’t get a chance to add to that number of great BCS memories – but for the true FSU football family members, both Whitfield and Warrick will live on.
