FSU football is going to be giving defenses a healthy does of Cam Akers next season – but one website says he may not be all he’s cracked up to be.

Entering the 2018 season for FSU football, there is no secret that one of the reasons why the Seminoles will be either successful or falter is going to be the play of sophomore running back Cam Akers – after all, this is the man who went for over 1,000 yards and set the freshman record for the Seminoles after being the top running back recruit in his class.

It’s a lot of pressure for any player to be under, much less someone who had been on campus for less than a year when he became one of the stars on the Seminoles’ offense – but Akers, for the most part, was able to overcome it and have a season many expected.

While he is getting praise from many people, he is also getting the “O” word from one source: overhyped.

247 Sports gave a ranking of 20 players that are considered elite in the college football game that may be getting too much love at this point – and the leading rusher for FSU football last season found his named on the list.

"Between the high expectations of Cam Akers as the next great Seminoles tailback and the uncertainty at quarterback, the hype machine will be a challenge. With so much of the offensive focus on Akers as Willie Taggart sifts through his quarterback situation, the need to start hot is sky high."

No, in the interest of being fair – the author did not say that Akers or any of the players on the list were bad, just that the expectations for them might be too high thanks to all the preseason talk. When put that way, it’s not as bad – considering we have said he must be more consistence and have the same 100+ yard games against everyone, not just Syracuse and Miami and others.

That being said, it’s also insane to thank that the FSU football young weapon will be anything but better than what he was last season – a record breaking back that was a bright spot on a bad offensive squad.

Joined by Jacques Patrick and Khalan Laborn in the backfield along with whoever is the starting QB, Akers is going to live up to the preseason hype and could finish the year as one of the best running backs in all of college football.
