FSU football knows things can’t get much worse than they did last season – but one experts believes that the Seminoles could end up being a surprise team.

Entering the 2018 spring portion of practice, the FSU football team was breaking in a new head coach in Willie Taggart while also trying to replace over a dozen players that went on to the NFL on both sides of the ball – something that has different experts saying different things about what the season will hold for the Seminoles.

Some think the Noles could end up making some noise in both the ACC and college football as a whole – maybe even pushing Clemson in the Atlantic Division – while others seem to think FSU football, based off a murder’s row schedule including the Tigers, Miami, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and more, will again be fighting for seven wins like last season.

You can count Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples among those who leans closer to the first one. During his question and answers session last week, the former Florida Gator actually gave the Noles some love and called them one of the four teams who could surprise the college football world and do well this season.

"Florida State has the roster to bounce back from a lost season quickly under new coach Willie Taggart. After a rough 7–6 season that started with a knee injury to starting quarterback Deondre Francois and ended with the departure of (Jimbo) Fisher to Texas A&M, the Seminoles are primed to bounce back much faster than other programs that have gone through that level of drama.Does that mean Florida State will overtake Clemson in the ACC Atlantic Division? Probably not. But it does mean the Seminoles could be back in a New Year’s Six bowl a year after all seemed lost."

We’ll get to the whole overtaking Clemson question closer to the season, but when you look on paper, there is no reason why the Seminoles can’t at least be a double digit win team next season – even with a schedule that is no in their favor.

When you’re quarterback spot is going to go to a talented player no matter who wins the job and you have three running backs who could start on any FBS team in the country, the offense is going to be just fine while the defense still has linemen and secondary talent that can play with anyone.

I’m not saying to book tickets to the Orange Bowl, site of one playoff semifinal this season just yet – but I also wouldn’t be resolved that another trip to the Independence Bowl is coming this season.
