FSU football faces plenty of uphill battles with the 2018 season – but could they actually end up being considered a disappointment from the year?

Before the 2017 season began, the FSU football team was ranked among the top five teams in the country heading into their season opener against Alabama. 13 games later, the Seminoles were thankful to finish the season with a 7-6 record and weren’t even close to sniffing the other receiving votes category, much less that top 25.

Because of that, the expectations have been brought down for some across the country and in the Noles camp entering the 2018 season. Between what took place last year, the number of losses to the NFL, a new head coach and a murderous schedule, not many people are booking flights for the Seminoles to either of the College Football Playoff semifinal games (the Orange and Cotton Bowls, in case you were wondering).

So, all that makes me wonder why one website decided to say FSU football will disappoint in 2018? The Spun, using the Football Power Index rankings from over at ESPN, said the Seminoles are among the five teams that WILL disappoint during the upcoming season.

"The Seminoles were really young in 2017 and they return a lot of their talent. They could be a popular College Football Playoff pick for some. However, the FPI sees them being more of a top 25 team than a top 10 team. It has FSU ranked No. 18."

Okay, I will go back to my original point: who is honestly picking this year’s FSU football team to make it to the CFP? I love my alma mater to death, but (spoiler alert for this August’s predictions here at Chop Chat) baring a major change between now and then I don’t see us picking the Seminoles to be one of the final four teams left standing.

Do I think the Noles will be a 7-6 team again next season? It’s possible with a schedule including Miami, Clemson, Florida, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and more…but no, I don’t. That being said, a 9-3 or 10-2 season would be an accomplishment in the first year under Taggart…far from a disappointment considering all the circumstances surrounding this season.
