FSU fans have been able to sit back and laugh as former Miami linebacker Jonathan Vilma and superfan Luther Campbell went at it on Twitter over recruiting.

If there is one thing that fans of the FSU football program love just as much as success for the Seminoles, it would be failures and in-fighting from our two biggest rivals – the Florida Gators and the Miami Hurricanes. We root against them no matter who they are playing against and can’t get enough of bad things happening to their program.

Well, on Wednesday, the ‘Canes gave us something to sit back and watch when two of the bigger names that have been around their program in the past decades – former linebacker Jonathan Vilma and alleged illegal booster and superfan Luther Campbell – went toe to toe with each other over a comment that included referencing FSU.

It started with a photo taken by a Palm Beach Post beat writer showing Campbell at a recent Miami practice:

The first shot was fired when Vilma commented on Campbell not being a true Cane since he has in the past encouraged youth and high school players he has coached to go to other schools – including players like Devonta Freeman and current FSU linebacker Emmett Rice to play for the Seminoles.

Well, that started World War III with Campbell not holding back on Vilma or any one else who thinks he is wrong for trying to get people into college – even if it’s not the one he is a fan of – with Vilma not holding back in his response. (WARNING: Some of the tweets have strong language…you’ve been warned).

Look, I get where Vilma is coming from on the surface – we wouldn’t want Burt Reynolds or Deion Sanders actively telling high schoolers to go to the Gators or ‘Canes whether it was the best thing for them or not.

That being said, Campbell is completely in the right with this one. His job as a coach or youth mentor is to do what is best for the kids. If that means encouraging them to go to FSU instead of Miami, he is doing the right thing by getting as many students into a college setting as he can. The choice of no college or the college of a hated rival is a no brainer: college all day, everyday.

As much as it may make Vilma and other ‘Canes mad, let Grandpa Luke send as many top players from South Florida to play for FSU as he wants!
