FSU football is expected to have a few former players be selected in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft.

A number of former FSU football players are shining at the NFL Combine taking place this week, especially those on the defensive side of the ball.

That alone makes it that much more frustrating for FSU fans considering how the Charles Kelly led defenses underperformed the last few years.

The Noles have had 11 defensive players drafted over the last four years with Jalen Ramsey being the only one selected in the first round.

Former FSU football All-American safety Derwin James believes he’ll join Ramsey as a top 10 pick in the NFL Draft.

James said, “I’m go top 10…I know I’m go top 10” when asked about his thoughts on where he’ll be selected in the upcoming draft. Of course, Jalen Ramsey was selected No. 5 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016.

James is no stranger to speaking confidently about himself as he said he believes he’ll be the best safety in the NFL in less than three years a couple of weeks ago.

Thoughts

There’s no question James is a top 10 talent and has already demonstrated a small part of his arsenal with his bench press results at the NFL Combine.

James is often compared to these two players with Berry being drafted No. 5 overall in 2010. Berry ran a 40 time of 4.47 and Derwin James is expected to be in that ballpark or better.

Eric Berry had a 43 inch vertical leap and broad jump of 130 inches. I expect James to be in that ballpark if not better as well.

There are no off the field issues, but teams may inquire about the meniscus injury that caused James to miss his sophomore season at FSU.

However, he played in every game (except the bowl game) his junior year and posted 84 tackles and two interceptions while also returning kick offs.

Berry had a shoulder injury that required surgery and still went No. 5. There’s no reason Derwin James shouldn’t go top 10 other than NFL General Managers making dumb decisions as usual.
