FSU basketball got a huge win on the road against a hot shooting Virginia Tech team.

FSU basketball (14-5, 3-4 ACC) led comfortably for most of the game against Virginia Tech (13-6, 2-4 ACC) but had to hold off the hot shooting Hokies for a huge ACC conference win on the road.

It was a game the ‘Noles need to win after a tough loss against Boston College earlier in the week.

FSU has 11 games remaining and will face either a ranked team or a team they’ve already lost to in five of them.

The ‘Noles had been struggling to put the ball in the hoop as of late, but luckily that wasn’t a problem Saturday afternoon.

Three Takeaways

  • The ‘Noles shot it well overall and from long range

FSU basketball shot a blistering 53.4 percent from the floor and 45 percent from three point land against the Hokies. That’s a far cry from the 33.8 percent from the floor and 19.2 percent from three-point land against Boston College. The ‘Noles only shot 40.2 percent from the floor in their double overtime win against Syracuse. FSU’s typically sound on defense, but allowed Virginia Tech to shoot 53.3 percent from the floor, so if not for the hot shooting FSU would have taken an L.

  • ‘Noles won the battle of the boards

There were not many opportunities for rebounds in the game with both teams shooting so well. However, the ‘Noles were still able to hold a decisive edge on the glass. FSU out-rebounded the Hokies 37 to 25 and nine offensive rebounds to five.

  • FSU made free throws down the stretch

The ‘Noles have struggled at the free throw line at times this year, but that wasn’t the case on Saturday afternoon. FSU was up 76-70 with 1:14 remaining in the game and proceeded to make 13-16 (81 percent) from the free throw line to finish the game. The needed every point as Virginia Tech wouldn’t go away as they scored on five consecutive possessions at one point.

Thoughts

Big road win for FSU as they need to get a win against Georgia Tech (10-9, 3-3 ACC) Wednesday night to get back to .500 in ACC play.

If FSU continues to play offensively how he did Saturday, they’ll have a chance to reach 10 wins in ACC play.

However, they’ll also need to buckle down defensively as no team should shoot over 50 percent from the floor against the size and length they have.
