FSU basketball is off to a mediocre start in ACC play.

FSU basketball lost a ton of experience and playmakers from last year’s team to the NBA so expectations were not the same as last season.

However, those expectations began to change after the ‘Noles jumped out to a (11-1) record after non-conference play ended. However, a gauntlet of three consecutive ranked teams to start ACC play and injuries have gotten FSU basketball to a mediocre (2-3) conference record.

It would be a bit better had FSU not blown a huge 13 point lead at home against Louisville to end their 28 game home winning streak last week.

The ‘Noles were able to survive blowing another big lead and winning in double overtime against Syracuse in their last outing without starter Terrance Mann who was held out due to concussion protocol.

FSU stands at (13-4, 2-3 ACC) and is a No. 8 seed in Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology update for the NCAA Tournament.

He has the ‘Noles playing No. 9 seed Rhode Island in the east bracket that will take place in Pittsburgh. FSU needs to finish in the top half of the ACC conference and has three winnable games coming up starting with a road game against Boston College Monday night.

FSU has a tough slate to finish out conference play. They have 13 games remaining and play the following ranked teams:

  • Miami-No. 25(Miami beat FSU last week)
  • UVA-No. 2 (2X)
  • Clemson-No. 20 (2X)

That doesn’t mean the other games are any easier and there are only two teams in the ACC with overall losing records (Wake Forest and Pittsburgh). FSU does have to travel to Wake Forest at the end of January. All the other teams are well above .500 overall.

Thoughts

FSU basketball has its work cut out for them but has a chance to win at least 10 games in conference play. If FSU wins 10 games in conference play that would be two less wins than last season.

If you experts said that at the beginning of this season I think everyone would have been happy with that all things considered. But first things first, they have to take care of business on the road against Boston College where they’re -3.5 betting favorites.

The game airs on ESPNU at 7 p.m. ET.
