No. 3 – October 8, 2016 at Miami (W 20-19)

Much like what took place before the start of this past regular season, all of us remember all the hype that surrounded FSU football at the start of the 2016 season. An win against Ole Miss had the Seminoles ranked as high as number two nationally, but it came crashing down after losses to Louisville and North Carolina, leaving the Noles with a 3-2 record as they traveled to take on an undefeated Hurricanes team desperate to break their losing streak to the Noles.

Early on, it looked like the Seminoles were in trouble and Miami was going to get the win as they scored the first 13 points. Just before the half, Florida State got on the board as Ricky Aguayo – who made a national name with six kicks in the opener against the Rebels but hadn’t shown the same consistency as his brother Roberto – kicked a 31-yard field goal through the uprights and got FSU on the board.

As many games had been under Fisher, the second half is where locker room adjustments showed up. The defense bailed things out when Tarvarus McFadden picked off Brad Kaaya, which led to Dalvin Cook – who had 154 yards on the ground – somehow being wide open for a 59-yard touchdown pass.

Later in the quarter, Deondre Francois found Kermit Whitfield for the go ahead touchdown. Aguayo would add another field goal in the fourth quarter to give FSU football a seven-point lead – which would be huge for one reason. With less than two minutes to go, Stacy Coley hauled in an 11-yard touchdown over McFadden. It was than that DeMarcus Walker got his paw up and blocked the extra point.

FSU football escaped with their seventh straight win, the longest for either team in this rivalry, and the season was saved from going off the rails thanks to something that usually caused fear for Seminoles fans – a kick against Miami.
