FSU football heads into the weekend with a 1-3 record and finds themselves in a situation where they face a must win against an old doormat in the ACC.

For the first 16 seasons that FSU football spent in the Atlantic Coast Conference, it was a given each season that the Seminoles knew they had at least one win on the schedule before the season started as games against the Duke Blue Devils were not going to be even close as the men in blue had seven double digit loss seasons and one winning one over that span.

Adding on the additional three games the teams have played over the last nine seasons, including the 2013 ACC Championship game, the Noles have not only won each game but have dominated in the process – winning each by an average of close to 35 points which includes a blowout 45-7 victory in that title game against the only Duke team to ever have double digit wins in a season.

Now, Florida State limps into Durham this weekend for a showdown with the 4-2 Blue Devils desperate to just get their second win of the season. It’s so bad right now that the 1-3 Seminoles are less than a touchdown favorite according to several outlets.

Is this how far FSU football has fallen this season? A team who has never been competitive with the Seminoles could be the reason that the Noles don’t make it to a bowl game for the first time since 1981 or have a winning season since 1976? The quick and simple answer: yes.

Even after the loss to Alabama in the opener that sidelined quarterback Deondre Francois for the season, there was hardly anyone who thought that not only would the team be 1-3 at this point – but that the Seminoles would have struggled to get that one win. Now, they head to the Tar Heel State for a game against a Blue Devils team that (I never thought I would say this) has a chance to win.

It’s not even so much because Duke is that could of a football team (as their four wins are against teams with a combined record of 6-14, with three of those wins belonging to FCS member NC Central), but because what have the Seminoles done so far this season to make you CONFIDENT that they will get the win?

While others may disagree, FSU football is the one who lost last week’s game against Miami…it wasn’t the Hurricanes who beat them. The same thing can be argued for both the opener against Alabama and the second loss to N.C. State. The Seminoles could easily lose the game this week and almost guarantee that first losing season baring a major turnaround.

The days of a guaranteed win over Duke on the football field are officially over – and if the Seminoles aren’t careful, their hopes of the postseason could be closer to being officially over with what would be a loss that you never thought could take place.
