FSU in the NFL: Former Noles victims of cuts before regular season
By Jason Parker
FSU has plenty of former players who will be taking the field on Sundays this season – but there will also be some former players who are now out of a job.
While the college football season is underway, the NFL still has four more days before they will kickoff the games that count. On Thursday, the defending champion New England Patriots will host the Kansas City Chiefs – a team that boasts having former FSU linebacker Terrance Smith as a member of their roster.
Saturday’s cut down day in the pro game sent rosters plummeting from 90 players to 53 – the first time rosters were cut all at one time after years of the first cut being from 90 to 75 after the second preseason game. While it meant that several former FSU football stars were still in the pro game longer than previous years, it also meant the ax was going to drop all at one time.
Here’s a look at which former Seminoles saw their dreams get dashed for the moment of being on a pro football roster, as recent cuts have left 11 teams without a former FSU player on their roster:
Chicago Bears – K Roberto Aguayo and FB Freddie Stevenson
After being cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the preseason opener – and missing his first kick with Chicago – Aguayo is being shown the door for the second time in weeks.
Cincinnati Bengals – WR Kermit Whitfield
Dallas Cowboys – CB Marquez White
White was taken by America’s team in the late rounds of this year’s draft and could end up on their practice squad.
Detroit Lions – DE Gio Newberry
Newberry, who spent time in previous camps with Pittsburgh, was called back to the league several weeks ago but wasn’t able to make the cut.
New York Giants – LB Chris Casher and WR Travis Rudolph
Casher signed with the team just three weeks ago after spending several months on the Oakland Raiders roster, while Rudolph left school early and was an undrafted free agent with the team.
Oakland Raiders – OL Kareem Are
Seattle Seahawks – WR Rodney Smith
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – WR Bobo Wilson
Tennessee Titans – OG Josue Matias
Matias was able to stay on after being drafted by the Titans in 2015, but was unable to make the team after the preseason came to a close.
