FSU football has had some memorable moments over the past 70 seasons – and two of them were ranked among the best games ever played by one site.
Over the past seven decades of games for FSU football, there have been moments that will never be forgotten. From rivalry wins to bowl victories and from comebacks to dominate wins, the Seminoles have given both their fans – and fans of college football as a whole – plenty to remember.
While the Noles haven’t been around as long as some of the other big name programs in the sport – programs that began to play before the 1900’s came into existence – Florida State has been a part of memorable games both won and lost. That was evident by one website that ranked the best college football games of all time.
Last week, SportsonEarth.com ranked the top 100 games in the entire history of the game – dating back to the first game between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869. Eight games involving FSU football found their way onto the list – including two of the Seminoles’ three national championship games:
"15. Florida State 34, Auburn 31 (Jan. 6, 2014; Pasadena, CA; BCS National Championship)A significant portion of the college football world wanted to dance on the grave of the Bowl Championship Series as the playoff era was ushered in, but the 16th and final BCS title game allowed the divisive system to go out on a high note.45. Florida State 18, Nebraska 16 (Jan. 1, 1994; Miami, Fla.; Orange Bowl)Florida State was ranked No. 1 by the AP poll and No. 3 by the coaches, with a loss to one-loss Notre Dame. Nebraska was ranked No. 2 by the AP and No. 1 by the coaches with a perfect record. Ten seasons after a Nebraska loss gave Miami its first title, a Nebraska loss gave Bobby Bowden and Florida State their first title, too."
Anyone who has been a FSU football fan remembers where they were during what may be the two biggest moments in the history of the program (1999 was sweet, but it clearly ranks third among the title wins). I still get scared watching the replay of the win over Auburn, worried something is going to change the outcome. Yes, I’m crazy.

Those were two of the three wins on the list for the Seminoles, with the third being the famous ‘Puntrooskie’ win over Clemson in 1988 (No. 88). The other five games included losses to Notre Dame in 1993 (tied for No. 18), Miami in 1987 and 1991 (No. 21 and No. 41), Florida in 1997 (No. 37) and Virginia in 1995 (No. 91).
