FSU football is considered by many to be a title contender this year – but is that group just a handful of teams in the FBS?

It’s no secret at this point that there is a lot riding on the 2017 season for FSU football. No matter which publication you look at, no matter which website you read your TV station you watch, many people out there are saying that the Seminoles will be one of the teams not just winning a Power Five conference this season, but also making the College Football Playoff.

But, are the Seminoles one of just a handful of teams who has a legit shot of making it to the playoff?

When you look at many of the preseason publications, the Noles are among a group of teams along with Alabama, Ohio State and a couple more who find their way on the list of teams who have a shot. The website College Football News recently ranked the 12 games they think will shape the final four team field.

The list includes just 13 teams – including FSU football and their games with Alabama and Clemson – that will play a role in deciding the field. That means that, of all the games being played this season involving the 130 teams in the FBS, just 10 percent of the teams have a shot of making the playoff system according to one respected site.

It’s not impossible to think that such a thing is true.

The way the playoff system has been developed, it can almost be better to lose a game than go unbeaten. Heck, in the first edition back in 2014, Florida State was unbeaten and finished behind a top seed Alabama with one loss and a second seeded Oregon team who had a loss. That’s why some think FSU football will make the playoff even with a loss to the Crimson Tide in the opener.

The truth of the matter is that, when it’s all said and done, the teams at the top of the polls to start off the season will be there come the first weekend of December when we know the four teams that will make the fourth edition of the playoff system. It may take some of the luster out of the season, but that’s the way it is.
