FSU football head coach Jimbo Fisher made a bold statement during ACC Football Kickoff this past week – and he was spot on with his thoughts.

With the college football season just seven weeks away, coaches and players from the ACC member schools, including FSU football, were in Charlotte this past week for the conference’s annual Football Kickoff – giving team reps a chance to meet with the media and talk up the conference heading into the 2017 season.

The ACC doesn’t have to do much talking when it comes to last season, in which Clemson won the conference’s second national title in the last four seasons (with the Seminoles bringing home the other one) to go along with having 11 teams go to bowl games with winning records and the top two players in the Heisman Trophy final vote.

With a heck of a resume from last season, it was comments from Florida State head coach that had some people shaking their heads when he was asked about the ACC at this point (h/t TheACC.com)

"I think we’ve established ourselves as I think the premier conference in college football. I think what we’ve accomplished in the last few years and the things we’ve been able to do as a conference and the commitment that our conference has made and the schools in this conference have made with the coaches, the players, and everything that goes with it."

While others may have a problem with what the FSU football leader may have said, Fisher was spot on correct.

Conferences like the SEC and Big Ten had a very good year in 2016 and in the seasons before when it came to having great teams at the top – but a middle group that was below average and bottom feeders who couldn’t hang with some Group of Five conferences.

At the same time, the ACC was consistently good from top to bottom (with the exception of Virginia and a few others) and could hang with the big boys. The numbers don’t lie when you consider that the ACC went 10-4 last season against the SEC – which many people wrongly consider the best conference in all of college football.

FSU football has done their part over the last quarter century to build ACC football from the Seminoles and the eight dwarfs into a Power Five conference that is now producing champions and talented teams each year. There is no reason to think that the conference will take a step back in 2017 – and the Seminoles could put an end to this discussion if they can win another title this season.
