FSU football has several openings on future schedules – and a recent ruling from the state of California could open the door to filling some of those slots.
In the coming years, FSU football will have several openings on their schedules that could be filled with any kinds of team. In all likelihood, it will be a home game against a FCS school as the program has started doing more under head coach Jimbo Fisher – but could a ruling from the state of California actually give the Seminoles a chance to leave the lower level behind?

Florida State Seminoles Football
Nearly two weeks ago, the state ruled that they would prohibit all publicly funded state travel from California to four states – Texas, Alabama, Kentucky and South Dakota – over laws passed in those states that lawmakers in California view as discriminatory toward the LGBTQ community. Already, California has banned state funded travel to four others states – Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kansas – that have similar laws.
For the five public universities that play FBS football – UCLA, California, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State – that could mean future games scheduled to be played in those states may have to be paid for out of pocket…and look a whole lot less attractive.
That’s where FSU football could step in and save the day.
Right now, there are four games that those universities have scheduled in states currently banned – Fresno State at Texas A&M in 2020 and California having games schedules at Ole Miss (2019), TCU (2021) and Auburn (2024).
The Seminoles, at this point, are looking for one more game in both the 2019 and 2020 seasons. With games against Boise State (Jacksonville) and West Virginia (Atlanta) being neutral site, Florida State just has five home games scheduled for each season and would be looking to fill out their slate with a home game each time.
Imagine a battle between the Golden Bears and Seminoles during the 2019 and a winner-take-all use of the letters FSU the following year. Florida State has never played either school (and has a combined 1-2 record against the other three public schools, losing twice to San Diego State and defeating UCLA).

It’s a long shot that any of this would take place – contracts are hard to get out of and the Seminoles have made no indication they would be interested in playing four FBS non-conference games in a season – but it would be nice to see FSU football play some new teams every once in a while.
