FSU Football: Three Noles on Latest 2017 Heisman Trophy Odds List
By Jason Parker
FSU football could have yet another player in the running for the Heisman Trophy award, as three stars are seeing their name among early odds.
Over the past quarter century, FSU football has seen several of its star players being associated with the top individual award in college football, the Heisman Trophy. From three winners – all quarterbacks in Charlie Ward, Chris Weinke and Jameis Winston – to numerous finalist and those who got snubbed from a trip to New York (Dalvin Cook, for example), the trophy has garnet and gold written all over it.
So far, as odds continue to come out for all kinds of things in the 2017 season, Florida State has a decent chance of seeing another player be involved in the Heisman conversation. Westgate Las Vegas, one of the top sports books in the country, updated their odds for who they think are the favorite to bring home the award.
Just like their last list in April, three Seminoles make the list – including one name that might be a little surprising:
Now, Francois stands a good chance of being able to make it to New York if he can show improvement from what was a pretty decent redshirt freshman season for the Seminoles. Some experts believe he can move into the lead spot early on if he can lead the Noles to a victory over Alabama in the opener.
At the same time, James is sitting pretty as the first defensive player on the list. Much in the same way that Jabril Peppers used versatility to get a trip to the Big Apple last year, Derwin could end up getting an invite of the amount of time he spends on the field this season – and if the defense shows vast improvement over last season when he was injured.
The last one might surprise some people in the fact that Murray didn’t really come on until the last five games of the 2016 regular season. Some of that might be people thinking the Francois / Murray team will be a lot like what Oklahoma had last year with Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook (you know, the wide receiver who didn’t belong as a finalist and took Dalvin’s spot).
