FSU football continues to have plenty of detractors based on their recent success – but one website says the hate is because of a player from years ago.

There is no doubt that the better you are, the more people are going to dislike you. From LeBron James to the New York Yankees, the teams and players who win are the ones that people say they can’t stand. With FSU football back among the most dominant teams in college football, the Seminoles know that those who don’t bleed garnet and gold are going to have hate for them.

That’s why is should be no surprise that one website, The Spun, ranked FSU football as one of the 10 most hated programs in the country. The surprising part is that it has nothing to do with five straight 10+ win seasons, a national title, three ACC crowns or big wins – nope, the Seminoles bought in the honor because of someone who hasn’t taken a snap for the program in close to two and a half years:

"A few years ago, Florida State would have been right near the top of this list. The 2013 Seminoles were an absolutely dominant team, led by an extremely polarizing figure: quarterback Jameis Winston.Winston brought them back to prominence, after some lean years. We may be a few years removed from the sexual assault allegations, crab legs heist, paintball incident, and everything else that came with Winston’s years in Tallahassee, but those who hate the ‘Noles certainly aren’t forgetting them."

Look, I get that people are either going to love Winston or hate him and there is absolutely no middle ground. There is a segment of the population that will not accept that fact that he was never charged for an alleged incident involving himself and a former FSU student. At the same time, the hate also goes toward the school because some feel he should have been punished no matter what by the school – even though he, once again, was never charged.

The truth is that Jameis Winston may be the best player to ever suit up for FSU football. That 2013 season was magical and the numbers he produced – and awards he won – may not be matched for a long time, if ever. Still, because of the off field stuff – much of his doing and some because people don’t want to see facts – he will never get the credit he deserves.

His No. 5 jersey will likely never be retired. He will get invited back to events for that team, but the fanfare will likely be less than other Florida State legends have gotten. Jameis Winston will never be rewarded for his on field accomplishments – because the haters are always going to hate.
