FSU fans are used to hearing crazy things from the mouths of Miami Hurricanes fans – but this one might take the cake about why they will win the ACC.

For those of you are younger, it’s time for a quick history lesson: there once was a powerful football team in South Florida called the Miami Hurricanes. They won championships, had award winning football players and actually used to beat FSU more than once a decade.

Now, they are a team with a freshman class that was three years old when they last won a national title (2001), five when they last won a conference title and had a double digit wins season (2003) and still in elementary school that last time they beat the Seminoles (2009).

Still, none of that has stopped fans of what used to be called “The U” from still talking like they are a relevant team. Despite winning one bowl game in the last 10 seasons and finishing second place in the Coastal Division just three times in the 12 seasons of existence, fans of the ‘Canes believe that this is the year they will get back on top – you know, the same thing they’ve been saying for much of the past decade and a half.

Now, one website covering UM has taken it to the next level. State of The U posted a piece saying that the Hurricanes will win the ACC this season and get to the College Football Playoff – and play in the Sugar Bowl – because…wait for it…head coach Mark Richt (entering his second season) did the same thing 15 years ago during his second season at Georgia:

"The quarterback situations between UGA and Miami slightly mirror each other. In 2002, UGA had an older quarterback David Greene and a dynamic dual-threat redshirt freshman DJ Shockley. An older QB like Evan Shirreffs could win the starting… while freshman N’Kosi Perry would play the part of DJ Shockley."

"The Georgia Bulldogs finished 2002 at 13-1. Their only loss was to their biggest rival, the Florida (Gators)…I would gladly take a 2017 regular season loss to rival FSU if it meant Miami’s first ever ACC Championship and a Sugar Bowl berth."

The writer continues to talk about the defense at Georgia improved in its second year, so the same MUST take place in Coral Gables. He also talked about running back Mark Walton – who had 1,117 yards last season, but in the biggest games had just 39 against FSU, 38 against Virginia Tech, 45 against Notre Dame and 52 in the bowl game against West Virginia.

Look, there is no doubt that even on his worst day, Richt is light years better for the Hurricanes than previous coaches like Randy Shannon or Al Golden. FSU fans saw what he could do first hand when he led the Seminoles offense for seven seasons before heading to the Bulldogs. That being said, that Bulldogs team was one of the best in the country – there is a decent doubt that Miami will even win their one division this season.

This is a Miami team that lost their best player (quarterback Brad Kaaya) and, with their best collection of players in recent years and a decent coaching staff, still dropped four games – including a seventh in a row to FSU. Fans of the Hurricanes would be smart to learn how to crawl first before they run.
