Ranking College Football Bowl Games Played in Florida
By Jason Parker
No. 1 – Capital One Orange Bowl (Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens) Established 1935
When you look at the history of college football – from champions to star players to memorable moments – this game each season is at the top of each list. From its original roots at the former Orange Bowl stadium near Downtown Miami (site of FSU’s first ever national title win over Nebraska following the 1993 season) to its new spot at the home of the Miami Dolphins, this is college football in a nutshell.
Florida State, in what may be a surprise to some, has actually made the trip down to the 305 the third most times of any team – only trailing Oklahoma and Nebraska, who both made plenty of stops when the game was associated with the champs of the former Big Eight Conference.
The Seminoles made their first trip after the 1979 season, losing in back to back seasons to the Sooners. FSU got their first win after the 1992 season, defeating the Cornhuskers in back to back years. Florida State has added wins over Notre Dame (1995), Northern Illinois (2012) and last season’s instant classic win over the Michigan Wolverines.
