Could FSU Football Have Multiple College GameDay Appearances in 2017?
By Jason Parker
FSU football, which has made just one appearance as a featured school on ESPN’s pregame show the last two years, is poised for more spots in 2017.
It’s a tradition for many college football teams – watching ESPN kick things off each Saturday with their three hour road show called College GameDay. FSU football fans haven’t had much of an interest the last two seasons, as the Noles were featured once last year (at Louisville) and zero times during the 2015 season.
It was a far cry from the two seasons before, when the Seminoles were the featured school a total of seven times during the 2013 and 2014 seasons – compiling a record of 6-1 over that span. The Seminoles are used to being one of the featured teams, with their 32 appearances being the fourth most all-time, just behind rival Florida, Ohio State and Alabama.
It’s a granted that the Seminoles will add at least one more game to their resume this season – but could this be another year of multiple appearances for the Seminoles? Let’s take a look at the five biggest games on the 2017 schedule and see what chance it has of being part of the festivities.
September 2nd vs. Alabama (in Atlanta)
Chance – 100 percent
You can pretty much write it down in pen that Rece, Desmond, Lee and Kirk will be outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium (or wherever the game is taking place) for this one. Herbstreit has said as much in previous tweets and it was confirmed Friday by Corso to a radio station in Alabama – which means you can also mark this down as an 8 p.m. national game likely on ABC.
Florida State Seminoles Football
September 16th vs. Miami
Chance – 75 percent
The Worldwide Leader has shown it doesn’t mind covering the same team over a short period of time (looking at you, SEC schools), so assuming both teams are unbeaten this game could be very sexy. The only real competitors could be Tennessee at Florida and Texas at USC, but with this being a rivalry that has started to get better recently, GameDay could be in Tally for the first time since 2014.
October 21st vs. Louisville
Chance – 30 percent
Yes, there is the element of revenge that would be sexy for the network – especially if the Seminoles are still undefeated and the top team in the country. However, with both USC at Notre Dame and Michigan at Penn State being the same weekend, this one could be passed over…particularly if they come down for Miami.
November 11th at Clemson
Chance – 90 percent
Baring an epic meltdown by one or both teams this season, it’s all but a certain that the road show will head back to South Carolina for the de facto ACC Championship Game. With two of the last four national champs playing, it’s almost a given. The only real competition might be Notre Dame at Miami, TCU at Oklahoma or Michigan State at Ohio State, but this one might be safe if things play out as expected.
November 25th at Florida
Chance – 30 percent
In the past, this has been one of the most covered games by the show, being the host site seven times over the last 24 seasons – including five times over a six season period between 1995 and 2000. It’s pretty much a granted at this point that the game will either be in Ann Arbor for Ohio State-Michigan or down south for Alabama-Auburn unless this game goes back to being a top five showdown.
