Dalvin Cook went from at one time being a high first round pick to someone waiting for Friday to be selected – and that fact is beyond crazy.

You knew something weird was going on during the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft when players like Washington’s John Ross and Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes – players originally thought to be late first round picks – were selected in the top 10 while Florida State’s Dalvin Cook sat at his Miami home waiting for a team to make the right move and call him.

That call didn’t come on Thursday night and the running back who was arguably the most explosive at that position in the entire draft will now have to wait until the second day of the draft to hear his name called.

The fact that we had to write that is insane – there is no earthly reason why Dalvin Cook should not have been one of the first 32 names called during the 82nd player selection meeting for the National Football League.

I’m over the idea that Cook should have been picked ahead of LSU’s Leonard Fournette or Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey – he should have, but that ship sailed a while ago – but you can not tell me that no other team needed a running back who was quite possibly the best at that position?

The Washington Redskins at No. 17? Went with Alabama’s Jonathan Allen. The Tampa Bay Bucs at No. 19 – who talked at length about a potential reunion between Cook and Jameis Winston? They went with Alabama’s O.J. Howard. That’s right, a team who will not have their starting running back for the first part of the season passed on a potential franchise player.

Some of it was because of Cook’s past during his early years at Florida State – while some of it probably had to do with lies that were spread from a weasel “runner” for an agent who made up stories about Dalvin Cook to sabotage him. Others are worried about his shoulder health – despite him playing all 13 games last season and running for over 1,700 yards.

Players with red flags got selected in the first round, like Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers and Ohio State’s Gareon Conley – who is being accused of rape. Don’t tell me that Dalvin Cook’s past immaturity from years ago, not three weeks ago like Conley, is anywhere in the same ballpark. How about the Denver Broncos selecting a player who has been kicked out of five schools – but is somehow an “inspirational story”.

Now, some team is going to get Dalvin Cook and underpay for him since he is a first round talent making second round money. It’s going to be hilarious when he makes the other 31 teams pay for their mistake.
