FSU football has a coaching staff that would rival any – but longtime ‘Canes fan Luther Campbell thinks the best unit is at a school not named FSU or UM.

For the first part of Jimbo Fisher’s tenure as FSU football head coach, the team dealt with a large amount of turnover regarding his assistance – much of it having to do with Mark Stoops becoming the head coach at Kentucky after the 2012 season and taking some assistants with him. Of late, it has been a unit that has stuck together and been arguably one of the best in the country.

From Lawrence Dawsey, Rick Trickett, Tim Brewster and more on offense to Charles Kelly, Bill Miller and others on defense, it’s been a group that other schools would dream of having. But, in the eyes of famed Miami Hurricanes

player payer

supporter Luther Campbell, the Seminoles are looking up at another school in the state when it comes to having the best staff.

Surprisingly, the former front man for iconic rap group 2 Live Crew – who has been an assistant coach for various high schools in South Florida and mentored local stars including former FSU football star Devonta Freeman – didn’t say the best unit belonged to his beloved Hurricanes in his Miami New Times column…but instead, another South Florida school is topping his list:

"Florida Atlantic University’s new head coach, Lane Kiffin, has brought in top-tier assistants who put the Owls on the ESPN highlight reel.Kiffin is already an offensive genius whose talents turned the University of Alabama Crimson Tide into a high-scoring machine…So who does he hire to run the Owls offense? Another one of college football’s best offensive gurus: Kendal Briles.Briles held the same job at Baylor University, where his offense racked up an average of 523 yards and 35 points per game last season."

So, because Kiffin brought in an offensive coordinator from a Big 12 school – you know, the Power Five conference where defense is optional each season – that’s going to be the ticket toward success for the Owls? Sorry, Uncle Luke…not buying it. But don’t worry, he’s got more to sell:

"He hired his brother Chris Kiffin as the defensive coordinator. From 2011 to 2016, Chris was the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for Ole Miss, where he landed players that became All-SEC stars, including Laremy Tunsil. Monte Kiffin, Lane’s father, also joined the Owls defensive staff. He led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense in the early 2000s that won Super Bowl XXXVII."

I think Campbell is missing one big difference that all coaches are going to realize when they lead the Owls this season: the talent level in Boca isn’t even close to being near what Monte Kiffin saw before in the NFL (pretty sure there is no one on the Owls defense that could compare with Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber and others) while we’ve come to realize the only way Chris Kiffin was able to get top players to join the Rebels were by committing NCAA no-no’s.

Campbell’s column was more of a direct warning toward the Hurricanes, saying that if head coach Mark Richt doesn’t win the ACC he could someday be replaced by Kiffin. How about FAU has a winning record or makes a bowl game first under the new head coach – something the school hasn’t done in either category since 2008 – before we start anointing him a savior.

In reality, the Owls could have brought in Don Shula, Bobby Bowden and Bill Belichick to run their program and they would still be light years behind FSU, Miami, Florida and even USF and UCF in the state of Florida. The truth is the talent is not on the level of the rest of the state.

In addition, give me a staff of proven assistants like Brewster, Randy Sanders, Brad Lawing and the rest of the Florida State unit over a group that hasn’t coached together yet and doesn’t have the college championship experience like the Seminoles’ unit does.
