FSU football was able to get another verbal commitment from one of the top recruits in the 2018 class, this time from a defender with a NFL pedigree.

With just under 10 months to go until National Signing Day gets underway for the class of 2018, FSU football came into the day with one of the top classes not just in the ACC, but in the entire country. That class got better when one more recruit decided to give a verbal commitment to the Seminoles – and it’s a name that will ring a bell with NFL fans.

Asante Samuel Jr., a rising senior at one of the top high school football powerhouses in the state of Florida – Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas – announced Thursday that he will be taking his talents north and committing to play for Florida State:

Samuel Jr. enters the summer before his final high school campaign ranked as the 14th best cornerback in the country and 27th best player in the Sunshine State from 247 Sports. The 5’9″, 166 lbs. four star defender at one time had been a commit to the rival Miami Hurricanes, but had been considered a strong FSU football lean of late by experts – culminating with a visit along with his family during last weekend’s Garnet and Gold spring game.

Of course, the younger Samuel is the son of Asante Samuel Sr. – who spent 11 years in the NFL as a defensive back with the New England Patriots (where he won two Super Bowls ), Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons. He is also a Florida native who played prep football in Broward County before staring at Central Florida in the early 2000’s.

Samuel Jr. becomes the ninth player to verbally commit to the 2018 class and the fourth from the talent rich South Florida area of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. The Seminoles would love to add to that number as they are still on the short list for Patrick Surtain Jr. – the son of former NFL defensive back Patrick Sr. – but are in a battle with LSU for the five star, top rated defensive back from Plantation’s American Heritage School.
