FSU Football: Did Cam Akers Solidify Starting Spot After Spring Game?
By Jason Parker
After FSU football held their annual spring game – and it became a coming out party for Cam Akers, who now has the inside track to start at running back.
After FSU football concluded spring practice with the annual Garnet and Gold game Saturday, much of the talk didn’t revolve around the 17-7 win by the garnet team – but about the play of one running back who has been on campus for just under three months but already looks like a seasoned pro.
Cam Akers, the top rated running back in the 2017 recruiting class, didn’t “start” the annual spring scrimmage, but once he entered the rotation the Mississippi native played like someone who doesn’t want to leave the field for the next three or four years – and possibly will be on the field to start things off in the opener against Alabama.
Akers finished the day with 87 yards on the ground over 10 carries, while adding 15 receiving yards on two receptions:
After the game, head coach Jimbo Fisher was quick to praise the effort of Akers while bring diplomatic and making sure to include some of the other backs in his stable according to Seminoles.com:
Florida State Seminoles Football
"“I thought (Akers) and Jacques (Patrick) ran well and I thought Ryan Green had some really nice runs,” Fisher said. “I thought Jacques had some really nice power runs and inside runs and ran good, and Cam got the chance in space.”“I thought (Akers) bounced a little bit and should have gotten more stout, but he’ll learn open-field running,” Fisher said."
At the same time, quarterback Deondre Francois was quicker to point out all the good things the true freshman did:
"“I feel like his production will be better than his talent,” Francois said. “And that’s a good attribute to have. He’s a smart kid and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.”"
While Patrick is the experienced one in the backfield and spent the last two seasons backing up Dalvin Cook, conventional thinking says he might end up backing up Akers to start the season. He has the size, strength and speed to compete with some of the top players and defenses in college football – and now, he has the beginnings of a resume after showing up against a defense that may be one of the better units in the sport.
