FSU football watched as West Palm Beach native Akeem Dent recently decommitted from rival Miami – does that mean the Seminoles have a shot?

For much of the last three decades or more, FSU football has produced some of the top talent in both college football and the NFL when it comes to the defensive back position and the entire secondary. Names like Deion Sanders, LeRoy Butler, Terrell Buckley, Jalen Ramsey, Lamarcus Joyner and more are just some of the many that makes the Seminoles the real ‘DBU’.

With names like Derwin James, Tarvarus McFadden and more on the current roster, that trend should continue – but head coach Jimbo Fisher wants more and now may have a chance to get the top rated defensive back in the 2019 class.

Akeem Dent, currently rated as the fourth best player in the state of Florida and top at the defensive back position in the nation, recently announced that he was backing out of his verbal commitment to a FSU football rival – the Miami Hurricanes:

While it’s still early in the process and anything can happen from this point on (considering the fact he’s a high school sophomore at this point), fans of Florida State and Fisher’s coaching staff can’t help but be ecstatic about these developments.

Dent is a 6’1″ cornerback who has had the size and speed to succeed early on at Palm Beach Central High School. He committed last July to the Hurricanes – and then attended camp in Tallahassee, where he was offered a scholarship by FSU football.

An early look at the 2019 roster shows the Seminoles will be in the market for help at the defensive back position. Over the course of the next two seasons, Florida State will lose players like McFadden, Calvin Brewton, Trey Marshall, Marcus Lewis and Nate Andrews. The Seminoles bought two cornerbacks in with this year’s signing class – including five star South Florida product Stanford Samuels III.

Dent could very easily end up going back to the ‘Canes or any one of the other schools interested in him – names that included Auburn, Florida, Georgia and West Virginia. However, this recent development is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly and should be considered GREAT news for FSU football nation.
