Former FSU star Jalen Ramsey has completed his first season in the NFL and justified his No. 5 overall pick status. We look at his rookie season stats.

Jalen Ramsey is considered one of the top 10 rookies in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus. Here’s what they had to say about Ramsey’s rookie season:

"There were some struggles early on, but by the end of the season, Ramsey looked like the player worthy of his top-five draft selection. From Week 13 and on, Ramsey was the highest-graded cornerback in the entire NFL, allowing a passer rating of 37.8 when targeted. For the season he allowed only 54 of his 102 targets to be completed for the sixth-best completion percentage against (52.9 percent) of any starting cornerback."

Ramsey was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars who had a very disappointing season. They finished the season (3-13), which makes Ramsey’s season even better in my eyes.

Going into the NFL Draft there were a lot of comparisons between Jalen Ramsey and Patrick Peterson of the Arizona Cardinals. Those comparisons turned out to be extremely accurate as they had almost identical rookie seasons.

Check their stats below:

Jalen Ramsey:

  • 16 Games Played
  • 65 Total Tackles
  • 1 Forced Fumble
  • 2 Interceptions(1 returned for TD)
  • 14 Passes Defended
  • 3 Stuffs
  • 0 Kicks Blocked

Patrick Peterson:

  • 16 Games Played
  • 64 Total Tackles
  • 0 Forced Fumbles
  • 2 Interceptions
  • 13 Passes Defended
  • 0 Stuffs
  • 2 Kicks Blocked

Of course Peterson returned punts and Ramsey doesn’t so there’s nothing to compare there. The fact that Ramsey was only targeted 102 times all season in a pass happy league speaks volumes as well.

The Jaguars have a solid foundation on defense with two former ‘Noles in the back seven. If only they could find a quarterback. Props to Jalen Ramsey on an excellent rookie season, and continuing to represent FSU as DBU.
