Chop Chat’s 2016 Preseason College Football Top 10: No. 6
By Jason Parker
Here’s a look at the next team in Chop Chat’s 2016 Preseason College Football Top 10 Rankings.
As we are in the final month without college football (thank God that nightmare is almost over), teams from across the country will be hitting the practice fields getting ready for the 2016 season. For 25 of those teams, the season will start being ranked in the first polls for the 2016 campaign.
From Tallahassee to Tuscaloosa and Norman to South Bend, everyone from the traditional powers to the upstart programs will look to find their name with a number beside it for (at least) the opening weekend of the 2016 season.
Here at Chop Chat, we aren’t different from anyone else…we have the teams we think will start off the year ranked way too high and those who aren’t getting enough respect. So, here is our list of the top ten teams entering the 2016 season.
Before we get hate mail from fans of schools who are mad we didn’t rank their team high enough (or didn’t rank them at all), know that this is just a preseason list entering week one. In no way are we saying that this list is the way things will end up on January 10, 2017 after the national championship team. After all, with (spoiler alert) a lot of our top 10 teams playing each other this season, there will be plenty of changes before the month of September is even done.
No. 6 – LSU Tigers
If there ever was a soap opera in the world of major college football last season, it would have been set in Baton Rouge with this Tigers’ team. After starting off the year with playoff hopes behind maybe the best player in the game, the month of November included embarrassing losses and what looked to be a coaching change that ended up not taking place.
Just like in 2015, the Tigers will give much of the offensive plays to the man wearing No. 7 in the backfield, running back Leonard Fournette. Where LSU will have the advantage is that while Fournette was the man surrounded by plenty of raw talent last year, players like quarterback Brandon Harris and wide receiver Malachi Dupre, for example, have another year under their belts and will help out with the workload.
On defense, LSU keeps their entire front four and entire secondary from last year’s team, giving the Tigers a leg up on the rest of the SEC when it comes to experience. Keep an eye on the linebacker group, where senior Kendall Beckwith is the only returner at that position and won’t have long to break in his teammates.
Game of the Year
October 22nd vs. Ole Miss – The rivalry game against the Rebels comes one game before the annual showdown with Alabama that has decided the SEC West the past two seasons. If LSU can’t beat the Rebels this year, then the Alabama game loses much of its importance.
Biggest Chance for an Upset
October 8th at Florida – If all goes the way it should, LSU should be undefeated heading into this battle with the Gators and looking ahead to the game with Ole Miss mentioned above. As much as we make fun of Florida, they are fully capable of putting a loss in LSU’s record real quick.
