Former FSU football star Jameis Winston still gets ridiculed about immature decisions made while in Tallahassee. However, none of those people recognize his extensive community outreach efforts.

Former FSU football star Jameis Winston could easily rest on his laurels going into his second year in the NFL.

He made the Pro Bowl as a rookie, starting every game for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and improved their overall record by four wins.

However, Winston has spent this off-season re-tooling his body by shedding 20 pounds and doing tons of outreach in the Tampa community.

Obviously there is tension nationwide with the recent violence against civilians and the police that have left many deaths on each side.

Deaths that didn’t have to happen.

Jameis Winston has always shown an affinity for working with young people, so it’s no surprise that he took an active role in an event involving that demographic.

Winston participated in the “Champions of Character Day” earlier this week in an effort to ease the tension between Tampa youth and the police.

The Tampa Bay Times captured Winston’s message to the youth who are participants in the Tampage Parks and Recreation’s “Stay and Play” initiative.

“You’ve got a wonderful opportunity … to control your destiny,” Winston said. “Everything that you can get involved in, everything you can to do to make yourself busy, get on it. … Getting more active in the community. There’s a lot of grass out here. I’m not from West Tampa, but when I see grass, I think of a football field.

“It’s something to do instead of being inside, watching TV all the time, playing those video games. By you working those thumbs, it’s not helping you become a better person. … You’ve got to get better every day. You have to read more. You have to be proud to go to school.”

Winston does tons of stuff like this that’s not recognized (and he really doesn’t want it to be) by those that continue to vilify him. For instance, here’s a snippet from his Twitter account from people thanking him:

That’s just a snippet from the last two months. Just incredible stuff despite some people who continue to fail at life.

So FSU football fans that are tired of seeing a former Nole great continue to get unwarranted criticism, continue to highlight his OFF the field work as well as his on the field accomplishments as a representative of FSU football.
