Some FSU football fans believe Mike Norvell can bring the Noles back to prominence. One website is waiting for him to accomplish things on the big stage.

FSU football hired Mike Norvell in early December 2019 after a lengthy coaching search that had more twists and turns than the Loch Ness Monster roller coaster at Busch Gardens.

However, his name was always in the midst of things despite all the other coaching rumors being heavy.

Norvell had an impressive run at Memphis, taking what the previous coaching staff did to new heights.

He’s been impressive in his first seven months on the job at FSU. He salvaged a solid 2020 recruiting class and has navigated an unprecedented time with the COVID-19 pandemic.

I believe the talent he’ll eventually attract to FSU will help him return the Noles back to prominence. One website wrote they felt the same way but ranked him as the eighth-best coach in the ACC. Here are the top eight coaches listed by Athlon Sports:

  1. Dabo Swinney-Clemson
  2. Mack Brown-UNC
  3. David Cutcliffe-Duke
  4. Bronco Mendenhall-UVA
  5. Dave Clawson-Wake Forest
  6. Scott Satterfield-Louisville
  7. Justin Fuente-Virginia Tech
  8. Mike Norvell-FSU

Thoughts

Of course, I have no arguments with Swinney ranked No. 1 as he has had Clemson operating at an elite level for half a decade. Mack Brown being No. 2 I can live with as he helped turn UNC around as has one of the highest-ranked 2021 recruiting classes in the nation.

However, David Cutcliffe at No. 3? While true, he has made Duke football much better than it ever has been, but that program is 24-26 over the past four years and plays in the weaker ACC Coastal Division. I have no problem with Dave Clawson’s position on the list as his record over the past four seasons is 30-22 while going 3-1 in bowl games.

Scott Satterfield and Justin Fuente should be in the top half of the coaches in the ACC. What Mike Norvell accomplished at Memphis is better than anything Cutcliffe has done of late and his record at Memphis. Here’s what my top half of the best coaches in the ACC would look like:

  1. Dabo Swinney
  2. Mack Brown
  3. Dave Clawson
  4. Bronco Mendenhall
  5. Mike Norvell
  6. Scott Satterfield
  7. Justin Fuente
  8. David Cutcliffe

Norvell improved upon what Fuente built at Memphis, and Scott Satterfield lost to Willie Taggart last year. I’m just saying he has to be penalized for that.
