FSU football coaches did an excellent job of evaluating QB commit Jeff Sims and it’s already paying off before he enrolls in Tallahassee.

FSU football commit Jeff Sims was rated as a three-star recruit in February when he chose to commit to the Noles after visiting.

A few months later and he’s ranked as a four-star with his ranking rising  over 400 spots while also being ranked as a top 10 QB in the nation according to the 247 Composite Rankings.

As we’ve written, he was invited to participate in the Elite 11 competition and usually in the mix as one of the better participants there.

247 Writer Charles Powers covered the event in person and provided his superlatives for the players that stood out most.

Sim was labeled as the player with the most upside:

"Though more raw than some his peers, the Florida State commit had some of the higher highs, especially early in the week. Sims has a live arm and is capable of making some impressive throws, but will need to continue honing his consistency to fully maximize his physical potential."

Thoughts

That’s the intriguing part about what Sims brings to the table. Physically, he’s impressive with great size at 6’3″ and nearly 200 pounds. He’s not a burner speed wise, but athletic enough to make plays with his legs if he has too.

That’s a good trait to have in the Kendal Briles offense but it’s not a necessity. The biggest thing is the consistency to be accurate while getting rid of the ball quickly to the playmakers.

Sims throws a solid deep ball too which is a staple in the Briles offense off playaction

He will likely redshirt his freshman year unless James Blackman decides to enter the NFL Draft after this season. That would be the best case scenario to allow him to get acclimated to the college game and immerse himself in the offense.

There are few true freshmen like Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence who can come in and be successful.

Nevertheless, Sims has the tools to be a very good college QB as he sharpens the tools in his toolbox.
