FSU offensive coordinator Walt Bell spoke with the media prior to Tuesday morning practice as FSU prepares for Northern Illinois.

FSU offensive coordinator Walt Bell seems ready to try anything to get this FSU offense respectable again.

Despite the embarrassing loss to Syracuse Saturday he and Coach Taggart seem to still believe they can turn this offense around even though the offensive line can’t block trash cans right now.

Their demeanor in interviews with media contrast quite a bit with Coach Taggart more upbeat and Coach Bell taking more of a “by any means necessary” approach to improving the offense.

It’s where the Noles are falling short the most followed by special teams play. Coach Bell’s interview can be seen below in its entirety:

Thoughts

I said this after the Samford game and I’m saying it now. The FSU offense is going to have to run Deondre Francois if they want to be successful.

He’s getting blasted in the pocket anyways, so he might as well get positive yardage out of it if he’s going to get hit.

I don’t care if it’s as simple as him dropping back on pass plays and counting 1-1,000 2-1,000 and then taking off if nobody is open down field.

FSU has to get positive yardage on first down to give themselves a chance to move the ball. I’d also stop running so much east-west stuff and concentrate on getting upfield more.

A run for no gain is better than a run for a loss of three yards any day. At the very least putting a drive together of one or two first downs helps change field position and gives the defense a breather from getting gassed in the first half.

The Noles have had terrible field position the majority of all three games they’ve played mainly because they can’t move the ball at all. They have 48 first downs through three games and opposing offenses have 63.

One huge reason is FSU is only converting third downs at a 23 percent clip because it’s usually third and forever. It won’t get any easier Saturday against Northern Illinois who fielded a top 15 defense last season.
