FSU received a huge boost this week win it was announced its leading scorer would return and will have Phil Cofer on the team when they open the 2018 season later this year.

He was the team’s leading scorer from a year ago with almost 13 points per game, and was the only player to start every game for FSU basketball in 2018.

Phil Cofer received a medical hardship waiver which granted him a fifth year of eligibility. An ankle injury sidelined him for all but 11 games his sophomore season.

FSU had lost two contributors from last year’s team in CJ Walker and Ike Obiagu, so the news of Cofer returning is huge to a team expected to be ranked preseason top 25.

Thoughts

As the social media reaction explains, fans being happy was an understatement. Coach Leonard Hamilton has seen a ton of talent depart from the program over the past two or three seasons.

Malik Beasley left for the NBA after just one season. Dwayne Bacon, Jonathan Isaac and Xavier Rathan-Mayes all pursued professional opportunities the following season.

Then there were the departure of Walker and Obiagu after this past season was complete. There was also the loss of Braian Angola who exhausted eligibility last year and was second on the team in scoring.

This FSU basketball is team is young and talented, but to the experience of Cofer is a game changer.

Not to mention he has improved every year he’s been at FSU, so it’s possible he’ll improve more on that near 13 points per game from last season.
