Another outlet has released its preseason all-star teams, and as has been the trend thus far, the defending champion Florida State Seminoles are well represented. Athlon’s All-America teams were published today, and six ‘Noles made the first team. Athlon gives Jameis Winston the first-team nod over second-stringer Marcus Mariota, unlike Sporting News and Phil Steele. Also on the first team are tight end Nick O’Leary, guard ‘Tre Jackson, offensive tackle Cam Erving, safety Jalen Ramsey, and kicker Roberto Aguayo.
The second team includes WR Rashad Greene and guard Josue Matias, and third-team honors are extended to defensive end Mario Edwards, Jr., cornerback P.J. Williams, and kick returner Levonte Whitfield. Running Back Karlos Williams is a fourth-team selection. Noticeably overlooked is cornerback Ronald Darby.
Darby does appear on Athlon’s All-ACC team, however, as do numerous other FSU players. In fact, the first-team offense is mostly ‘Noles. Joining Winston, O’Leary, Jackson, and Erving on the first squad are Williams at RB, WR Greene, and tackle Bobby Hart. The defensive first team features Edwards, Ramsey, Williams, and linebacker Terrance Smith. First-team specialists include Aguayo and Whitfield.
The second team has Darby, Matias, and defensive tackle Eddie Goldman. Linebacker Matthew Thomas is on the third team, and Nile Lawrence-Stample is a fourth-team defensive tackle.
Florida State’s representation on Athlon’s all-star squads should come as no surprise– the site ranks FSU as the country’s top team.
