The fourth-ranked Florida State Seminoles (39-13, 19-8) conclude their regular season campaign vs. the Duke Blue Devils (31-21, 15-12) at Dick Howser Stadium this weekend. The first game is tonight at 6 pm and is followed by games Friday at 6 pm and Saturday at 1 pm.
The Seminoles took two of three from the North Carolina Tar Heels last weekend before dropping a sloppy 8-3 game vs. the UCF Knights on Tuesday. FSU used seven pitchers in that game, and the offense simply could not match the eight runs the Knights put up. The ‘Noles rank second in the ACC with a 19-8 conference record, and Duke is fifth at 15-12, both off which are impressive, due to the difficulty of an ACC baseball schedule. With three ACC teams projected to receive top-8 seeds in the NCAA tournament (Miami, Virginia, and Florida State) there is no questioning the competitiveness of the conference.
Luke Weaver (7-3, 2.65 ERA) continues to impress and will get another chance tonight to do the same. Last season Luke Weaver was the day-one starter for super regionals, so he knows how to pitch in crucial games such as this one.
Mike Compton (6-1, 3.06 ERA) picked up his sixth win last weekend in yet another impressive outing vs. UNC. Compton has emerged as a second ace for the ‘Noles this season, just a year removed from Tommy John surgery. With Brandon Leibrant out indefinitely (there’s talk of his returning before regionals), Compton has had to step into the day-two starter’s role and has done more than enough for the Seminoles.
The Seminoles are in a deadlock with the Virginia Cavaliers for the one seed in the ACC tournament, making these three conference games that much more important. The Cavs finish their regular season at Wake Forest.
