The fourth-ranked Florida State Seminoles (40-13, 20-8) got win number 40 overall and win number 20 in conference as they blanked the Duke Blue Devils (31-22, 15-13) 3-0 tonight inside Dick Howser stadium.
The Seminoles did not produce much on offense but got all they needed as Luke Weaver dominated once again. The ‘Nole bats got going in the bottom of the third with a John Sansone double and a wild pitch that moved him to third. Danny De La Calle followed with a one-out RBI single down the third-base line that gave FSU a 1-0 lead that they would never give up. Casey Smit singled to right field, scoring De La Calle and making the lead 2-0. DJ Stewart stepped up with two outs and extended the margin to 3-0 on an RBI groundout to short. The Seminoles continue to find a way to have the big inning and put runs on the board. As long as the pitching is right there behind the ‘Nole offense, they should be able to produce deep into the postseason.
Weaver left the game after seven innings. His line: five hits, one walk, four strikeouts, and no earned runs. It was his fourth start this season in which he has not allowed a single run to cross the plate. Gage Smith pitched the eighth, making his 35th appearance of the season and another perfect one. Jameis Winston pitched a perfect ninth, earning his sixth save of the year and improving Luke Weaver to 8-3 on the season.
This win marked the 37th time Florida State has posted a forty-win season, including all 35 under Mike Martin. Virginia vs. Wake Forest was postponed tonight, so Florida State’s hunt for the one-seed in the ACC will have to be pushed off one more day. Mike Compton (6-1, 3.06 ERA) will take the mound Saturday as the ‘Noles will host Duke once again tomorrow night starting at 6 pm.
