Tonight the No. 4 Florida State Seminoles (36-11) head to Deland, Florida to take on the Stetson Hatters (20-29) in the conclusion of a three-game series that began April 22nd in Tallahassee.
FSU is coming off a weekend series sweep over the Minnesota Golden Gophers in which the ‘Noles pulled out two close games Saturday before winning convincingly 7-1 on Sunday afternoon, all without closer/utility outfielder Jameis Winston. The Seminoles have already won the series vs. Stetson this season and will go for the sweep tonight. Winston returns to the Florida State clubhouse as well.
Kenny Burkhead (1-0, 9.29 ERA) will get his second carreer start tonight. In his last start, Burkhead went just one inning in a bout vs. the South Florida Bulls on March 5th. Burkhead has only pitched 7.2 innings all season, so either manager Mike Martin has seen significant improvement lately, or he simply wants to allow some other members of the Seminoles’ beleaguered staff the day off. Burkhead will face Stetson RHP Kurt Schluter (1-1, 6.19 ERA).
It is worth noting that Martin and the Hatters’ head ball coach, Pete Dunn, both rank in the top-8 in most career wins in NCAA baseball history. Martin is 2nd with 1,806 wins, and Dunn is 8th with 1,248 victories.
The ‘Noles will conclude this series tonight then prepare for ACC-foe North Carolina, whom they face this weekend in a three-game series. Florida State is in prime position for a national seed and another road win can only help build their RPI down the stretch.
