Name: Ukeme Eligwe
Eligibility: Redshirt Freshman
Twitter Handle: @Eligwe52
2012 Season Stats: N/A
Prognostication: After redshirting in 2012, Ukeme Eligwe is ready to take the field for the Seminoles in 2013 and see if he can live up to the hype he received coming out of high school. The powerhouse linebacker out of Stone Mountain, Ga. was a consensus top 10 recruit across the board and chose FSU over Cal and Georgia. Eligwe was impressive in camp in 2012, however a hand injury hindered his chances of seeing the field. There was talk that he could have at least contruibuted on the field last year as a special teams piece. Nonetheless, the redshirt freshman impressed enough people this past spring to have him as a serious threat to grab one of the open outside linebacker slots.
Strengths: Eligwe’s combination of size and speed is perfect to be an effective man on the outside. The young man has beefed up quite a bit since arriving on campus in Tallahassee–he was listed around 215-pounds coming out of high school–and was able to keep his quickness intact along with that. He’s extremely agile and can also be a formidable pass-rushing threat off the edge.
Weaknesses: Depth at the position will likely factor in to Eligwe not seeing much time on the field this season. Jeremy Pruitt should be heavy on the defensive back schemes, and I can’t see Christian Jones or Telvin Smith being the first ones off the field when the nickel and dime packages are called upon. Speaking of defending against the pass, this is also an area I’d like to see Eligwe work on just a little bit more. He’s an aggressive player, but he also needs to be aware of what’s going on in the passing game if he wants to solidify himself as a complete strong-side linebacker.
