The AP Poll came out and the Florida State Seminoles were ranked eleventh by media folk. So, what exactly does that mean in terms of what we should take away from that?
Nothing. Nada. Zilch. A movie starring Robert Downey Jr., Andrew McCarthy, Jamie Gertz and a young James Spader.
Preseason rankings rarely hold form during the regular season. I am one of the people who think no one should be ranked until actual games are played, although, I understand the allure of having things ranked and then analyzing them to the point of nausea. It’s why websites have gone the route of doing everything they can to force slideshows down our throats and ranking the most mundane of things (like, this isn’t necessary, is it?).
Regardless, Florida State came in at 11 and the rest of the rankings are pretty much what everyone thought they would be. Alabama is on top, while Ohio State, Oregon, Stanford and Georgia round out the top-5. My only disagreement would be with where Louisville happens to be slotted (9). Their schedule is lined up in a way which puts them in a position to run the gauntlet. It’s almost like the media is already punishing them for having a less than stellar strength of schedule.
As for FSU, though, this ranking is holding to what many people projected for them. What it does do, however, is keep the expectations for this year’s team relatively high. No matter which QB Jimbo Fisher decides to start — Jameis Winston or Jacob Coker — there is going to be inexperience behind center. Generally, something like that would temper the expectations, but it’s not stopping the media or fans from thinking the Seminoles are the real deal Holyfield.
If you read our State of The Seminoles, then you know our lead football writer, Jack Jorgensen, thinks a 9-3 or 10-2 season is realistic. That would make for an eleventh ranked team.
Where do you think the Noles should be ranked in the AP Poll (or whatever fictitious poll you invented)? Let us know or something.
