Name: Jacob Coker
Eligibility: (RS) Sophomore
Weight: 235 lbs
Twitter Handle: N/A
2012 Season Stats: 45 passing yards and one touchdown.
Prognostication: Jacob Coker is a dark horse candidate to start at quarterback for Florida State. When I say dark horse, I mean the other guy who is competing for the job who isn’t Jameis Winston. At this point it almost seems like a lock that Winston ends up with the starting gig, although, Coker should fall in the depth chart no worse than being the backup.
Strengths: A big, pretty athletic and fairly experienced player. Jacob Coker might not have seen a ton of time on the field for Florida State, but this is going to be his third year with the program. Coker possesses a really strong-arm to go along with being more athletic than most 6’5″ quarterbacks. From limited time under center, it seems like Coker does have pretty solid pocket awareness as well.
Weaknesses: It is really hard to say what Coker’s weaknesses are without going back to his scouting report coming out of high school. Without being on the field a substantial amount of time during his tenure with FSU, but excelling when he is, you would think he has none. He does, however, and it comes down to consistency, accuracy and playing in this style of offense.
Fairly random, but awesome, Jacob Coker factoid: Coker played some basketball in high school and ran a form of the option at the same level in football. The option aspect really goes against what most people think about when imagining what an option quarterback looks like. Regardless, those things help highlight that Jacob Coker is a far better athlete than given credit for.
